Sanjay Dutt's jail term to be cut short by six months

Sanjay Dutt, who is currently serving time in the Yerawada jail, might get an early respite from the imprisonment thanks to his good behaviour, as stated in a Maharashtra Times report.

According to the reports, an inmate can get a minimum respite of 114 days if they have behaved well during their imprisonment term. Citing sources, the report claims that the jail authorities are checking the details of this clause.

A clause in the jail rules states that if an inmate's behaviour is good, he gets three days' leave and if he has done a commendable job on the fields, he gets four days' leave, taking the total number of leaves to seven, per month. Apart from this, if the inmate has displayed examplary behaviour throughout the year, he is entitled to a minimum 30 days leave. The right to grant this respite lies in the hands of the sub-supervisor, chief supervisor and the senior police officials. They can grant a leave of 30, 60 or 10 day as deemed correct by them.

According to this, thanks to his good behaviour, on an average of seven days per month and 30 days a year, Sanjay Dutt can get a leave of about 114 days. If this is the case, then the report states that, Sanjay Dutt will be out of the jail almost six months earlier than the slated release date.
