WINE :: The French are coming

According to British Master of Wine Anthony Hanson’s Bordeaux Vintage 2006 Report, the soon to arrive wines reveal that; “2006 was a year of contrasts, spring and summer had been hot and dry allowing grapes to ripen through high heat in late July and early September. A cool August, with late rains in the northern Medoc and Sauternes, was followed by almost two weeks of warm, dry weather allowing sugars to rise to levels approaching 2003 and 2005. In terms of styles, the wines are fresh and concentrated, yet elegant , and the best examples have sweet fruit and fine balance. In Sauternes late rains posed problems for some vineyards. Barsac generally had the best of the conditions and there are a number of great wines throughout the region.”

Before reading the small selection of reviews below, note that a tasting assessment is difficult at an early date. Many barrel samples are legally ‘doctored’ to appeal to critics in particular the American ‘Wine Spectator’ magazine and Robert Parker. The wine that is finally bottled may or may not be what was tasted following vintage. Finally be aware that prices given may vary.
